The most persistent oversight we encounter in Huntsville projects is treating the whole city as a uniform seismic hazard zone. A site off Old Madison Pike on weathered limestone residuum behaves nothing like one near the Tennessee River alluvium south of Triana, yet many preliminary designs assume a generic Site Class before microzonation data exists. When the structural team later discovers a one-second spectral acceleration mismatch of forty percent, the foundation redesign erases months of schedule. Our seismic microzonation work maps these transitions precisely, combining 158 borings from the city’s karst terrain with multi-channel surface wave profiles that resolve the top thirty meters at every critical parcel. For deeper velocity contrasts that affect basin-edge effects, we often pair microzonation transects with a targeted MASW survey to constrain shear-wave velocity without the spatial averaging that downhole methods introduce over short intervals.
